Mel is the MP for the Central Devon Constituency. He lives locally in Ashburton with his family. Mel is a believer in the importance of grassroot politics, he is constantly at doorsteps listening to local concerns and has been a vigourous local campaigner. Mel has raised over 10,000 signatures to support our post offices, protecting our hospitals (as Co-Chairman of the Crediton Hospital Campaign Group), he is working to improve our schools (he is the Governor of Okehampton College), to secure affordable housing and to ensure that infrastructure is available to support new development. He is fighting for a fairer deal for our hard-pressed farmers and he also campaigns on green issues (having launched the 'One Tonne Green Challenge').
Mel also has strong interests in our history and culture. As a hobby he is a qualified tourist guide, with authorisation to guide in some of the country’s most important sites, including the British Museum. In 2005 Mel won the ‘Tourist Board Guide of the Year Award’.
